The short version
- Premier Season Five began July 8, 2026, resetting Premier ratings
- Cache is in the Active Duty map pool; Overpass is out
- C4 explosion damage was fully redesigned on all official defusal-mode maps — damage now comes from precomputed simulation values baked into the compiled map, and the shockwave expands outward from the center instead of applying instantly
- Valve also removed the old map-wide minimum of one damage from bomb explosions
- A July 20 follow-up made bomb explosions disperse smoke grenade clouds and extinguish molotov/incendiary fire, and made the bomb’s damage-health preview appear once the bomb becomes audible
- Two new weapon collections (Arabesque, Spy Tech) and two new sticker collections (Fruits & Vegetables, Auto Racing) joined the Armory
Counter-Strike 2’s Premier Season Five is live, and it brought the biggest change to the map pool and to the bomb itself that CS2 has seen in a while: Cache is back in Active Duty, Overpass is gone, and the C4 no longer explodes the way you’ve spent two years learning.
Cache in, Overpass out
The pool swap landed with the season on July 8. Cache — a long-running community and competitive staple — replaces Overpass in Active Duty, which means Premier, and the strat books everyone built for Overpass are now shelf decoration.

The bomb rework is the sneaky-big change
Valve re-designed the effective range and extent of C4 explosion damage on all official defusal maps. Two things actually changed under the hood: damage is now applied from precomputed simulation values baked into the compiled map rather than calculated live, and the explosion’s shockwave rapidly expands from the center instead of landing everywhere at once. Valve also dropped the old rule that guaranteed at least one point of damage map-wide.

Then the July 20 update pushed it further into strategy territory: a detonating bomb now disperses smoke grenade clouds and extinguishes molotov and incendiary flames. Post-plant smokes and fire-blocked retakes behave differently now, and the bomb’s damage-health preview appears as soon as the bomb becomes audible — useful information for anyone deciding whether a hero defuse is survivable.
Why it matters
CS2 is one of the games this community stacks up for on scrim nights, so a map-pool swap plus a mechanical change to the bomb is the kind of patch that resets everyone’s habits at once — including the good players’. Cache callouts are worth relearning before the next Premier night, and if you’ve been reflexively smoking post-plant, that read is now wrong.
