The short version

  • V3.1.0 “Henpocalypse” is live on the experimental branch only — opt in via Steam’s latest_experimental beta branch
  • Headline feature: chicken farming, via a new Chicken Coop workstation with three tool slots, a Chicken Stress mechanic, four chicken recipes, and a Big Beak cosmetic
  • New sandbox options: Chicken Coop Time / Yield / Input, Infection Chance, Hunger/Thirst Multipliers, and Stack Size Multiplier
  • Enemy and animal Density/Respawn settings now split by day and night
  • The Fun Pimps confirm it’s “a real content update, not a point-release”
  • V3.0.1 stable shipped July 13; the current stable build is where most servers still sit
  • V4.0bandits, story mode, and a learn-by-doing skill toggle — is still targeted for later in 2026, built by a separate team in parallel

The apocalypse now has poultry. 7 Days to Die’s V3.1.0 “Henpocalypse” is out on the experimental branch, and despite the joke name it’s a proper content update rather than a bugfix roll-up — chicken farming, a new workstation, and a batch of sandbox sliders server admins have wanted for a while.

What’s actually in Henpocalypse

The centerpiece is the Chicken Coop, a new workstation with three tool slots that turns chickens into a renewable food loop instead of a lucky find. It comes with a Chicken Stress event mechanic — coops aren’t fire-and-forget — plus four new chicken recipes and a Big Beak cosmetic for anyone who wants to commit to the bit.

The quieter but more consequential change is for anyone running a server: enemy and animal Density and Respawn settings are now split between day and night, and the sandbox options list grew to include Chicken Coop Time, Yield, and Input, an Infection Chance slider, Hunger and Thirst multipliers, and a Stack Size multiplier. That’s a real amount of new tuning surface for a persistent world.

Where this sits in the roadmap

V3.0 launched simultaneously on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 with crossplay on June 29, and V3.0.1 followed as the stable build on July 13. Henpocalypse is experimental-only for now, which is the usual Fun Pimps cadence — experimental first, stable once it settles.

The bigger one is still ahead. V4.0 — bringing bandits, story mode, and a learn-by-doing skill toggle — is being built by a separate team in parallel with V3.x maintenance, an arrangement the studio has credited to Behaviour Interactive’s acquisition of The Fun Pimps back in April. It’s targeted for later this year, with no firm date.

Why it matters

7 Days to Die is one of the two games World Government runs a dedicated server for, so update cadence here is a practical question, not a spectator one: experimental builds can break saves and mods, which is exactly why WG // Navezgane stays on stable. Henpocalypse is worth poking at in a solo world now, and worth planning around whenever it promotes. V4.0’s bandits are the one to actually clear a weekend for.
