The short version
- Physical disc production for new PlayStation games stops January 2028 — games already out (or releasing before then) aren’t affected
- PS3 and PS Vita digital stores close in most countries July 2027 (some regions earlier)
- Already-purchased digital games on PS3/Vita stay downloadable after the shutdown — only new purchases get cut off
- Sony says 85% of PS4/PS5 game sales are already digital, versus 15% physical
- Unconfirmed rumor: PS6 may ship with a detachable/optional disc drive, reportedly for backward-compatibility reasons
Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that it will stop producing physical discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles, starting January 2028. After that date, new PlayStation games will be digital-only across the PlayStation Store and retail.
What’s actually changing
This only affects games releasing after January 2028 — anything that has already released, or releases before that cutoff, in disc format is unaffected. Sony frames the move as following consumer behavior rather than forcing it: digital downloads already account for 85% of full-game software sales on PS4 and PS5, versus 15% physical, per Sony’s own Q4 FY2025 financial results.
PS3 and PS Vita stores are also closing
In a related announcement, Sony confirmed the digital PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita will close in most countries in July 2027 (sooner in some regions — August 2026 for Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua; late 2026 elsewhere in Latin America and the Middle East). Games you’ve already bought digitally on those platforms will stay downloadable “for the foreseeable future” — the closure only cuts off new purchases.
The backward compatibility problem
Neither the PS3 nor the Vita’s library is natively playable on PS5, so once those storefronts close, plenty of PS3/Vita-exclusive digital titles become effectively unobtainable through official channels. There’s an unconfirmed rumor that PS6 could ship with a detachable or optional disc drive — if true, reportedly for backward-compatibility reasons specifically, which would at least help players with existing physical libraries.
Not the first time this has come up
Sony proposed closing the PS3 and Vita stores once before, in 2021, and reversed course after community backlash. This time the announcement is paired with the broader physical-disc phase-out, and early reaction online points to the same concerns as before: losing access to older exclusives, and long-term game preservation.
Why it matters
However you feel about physical media, this is Sony formally committing to a digital-only future for new releases within about a year and a half — and it’s the clearest sign yet of where the PS3/Vita era’s digital library is headed once those stores go dark.
