Marvel’s Wolverine is Insomniac Games’ next big PlayStation exclusive, launching September 15, 2026 on PS5 only. Directed by Brian Horton and Cameron Christian — the team behind Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales — it tells an original, standalone story starring James “Logan” Howlett, built in collaboration with Marvel Games and Sony.

Story: Team X, the Reavers, and Bolivar Trask

Logan reunites with Team X, a mutant task force, after learning that a group of mutants has been hunted down and captured by the Reavers — a cybernetic, guns-for-hire militia. The Reavers are working for Bolivar Trask, a billionaire industrialist whose fanatical belief in human superiority drives the plot. The story leans into mutants living in hiding while the rest of the world remains unaware they exist, giving the game a persecution-and-survival throughline rather than a typical superhero romp.

New allies and old rivals

Jean Grey channels her telekinetic powers, hands raised and eyes glowing with a bright purple aura

Jean Grey is confirmed as a major ally, using telekinesis to team up with Logan on takedowns throughout the campaign. Sabretooth shows up as a rival teammate — the trailer teases friction between him and Logan well before any claws come out — and the Sentinels loom in the background as a larger threat still to be revealed.

Combat: claws, Rage, and Rage Tier 3

Combat centers on claws, mobility, and Logan’s healing factor. Special moves called Techniques — including Tornado Spin and Bull Rush — open enemies up for follow-ups and team finishers. Every successful attack, parry, or kill fills a Rage meter; higher Rage powers up attacks and, at its peak, unlocks Rage Tier 3, a stylized black-and-white berserker state inspired by Marvel Comics’ Black, White & Blood series. A Last Stand mechanic activates Logan’s Healing Factor when he’s critically low, and Critical Strikes can be executed solo or cooperatively with Jean.

Beyond straight combat, the game also supports stealth and ambush options for a more tactical approach, plus dedicated set pieces — including motorcycle combat sequences shown during the June State of Play.

Not open world, and other things confirmed at State of Play

Sabretooth snarls with bared teeth, fire and falling embers behind him

Insomniac opened PlayStation’s June 2, 2026 State of Play with a seven-minute extended gameplay trailer, confirming Marvel’s Wolverine is a focused, single-player action-adventure rather than an open-world game — a departure from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. Comprehensive accessibility features covering cognitive, visual, auditory, and motor disabilities are also confirmed for launch. Pre-orders opened immediately after the State of Play.

Editions and pricing

Standard Edition ($69.99) includes the Classic Brown Suit and Reflective Claws as early unlocks, +1 Technique Point, and 4 PS Avatars. Digital Deluxe Edition ($79.99) adds all standard bonuses plus 5 exclusive suits (Incredible, Savage, Age of Apocalypse, Night Hunt, New Leather), 5 exclusive claw designs, and +3 additional Technique Points. All suits and claws are cosmetic only.

Why it matters

This is Insomniac tackling one of Marvel’s most iconic characters with the same studio muscle that made Spider-Man swing so well — a tight, single-player story with a genuinely novel combat hook in the Rage system, rather than another open-world checklist game. The PS5 exclusivity (and no PC version at launch) will sting for anyone outside PlayStation, but for PS5 owners this looks like one of the platform’s biggest fall releases.
