Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches August 27, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC — a prequel from series developer Asobo Studio that trades the franchise’s long-running stealth focus for real combat, built around a new protagonist making her way through a myth-soaked island.

A new protagonist, and a real combat shift

Sophia is a skilled, agile fighter who engages in dynamic, violent melee combat — a notable departure from the sneak-and-evade playstyle that defined the original Plague Tale games. Rather than playing the underdog who avoids fights, Resonance puts Sophia through direct confrontations as she journeys to the Minotaur’s Island, working to outsmart deadly foes and unravel the secrets behind a devastating curse. According to Asobo, the studio spent close to four years and grew its team by roughly 80 developers specifically to support this shift toward an action-driven protagonist.

Puzzles built around light and a stolen sphere

Combat isn’t the only thing getting more attention — the game leans heavily into puzzles built around a stolen Minoan sphere that manipulates light, a force woven into the island itself by its mythical architect, Daedalus. Sophia also carries a crew notebook to help track her path through what’s described as a maze of increasingly complex light-based puzzle sequences.

Editions and where to play it

Resonance releases at $59.99, with pre-orders adding the Heritage Pack — the Minoan Sword, Alec’s Pendant, and an exclusive digital artbook. It’s available day one on Xbox Game Pass, with Xbox Play Anywhere support letting Xbox and PC players share progress and purchases.

Why it matters

A Plague Tale built its reputation on tension through vulnerability — Amicia and Hugo surviving by staying hidden, not by fighting back. Handing the next entry to a protagonist built for direct combat is a real departure from that identity, and whether it works will likely come down to whether Resonance finds a new kind of tension to replace it. Either way, it’s a big enough swing from series developer Asobo to be worth watching closely at launch.
