Rockstar confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI is now locked for November 19, 2026, after an earlier date slipped from May. It’s console-only at launch — PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — with no PC release date announced. Historically Rockstar’s PC ports have landed something like a year or more after console (GTA 5’s PC version came roughly 18 months after console; Red Dead Redemption 2’s took about 13), so PC players should plan on 2027 at the earliest, possibly later.

Setting: Leonida, and a Vice City built for now

The game is set in the fictional state of Leonida, with a modern take on Vice City — drawing heavily on Miami’s architecture and culture — at its center. Rockstar has described the wider map as substantially larger than GTA 5’s, with Vice City surrounded by additional regions rather than being the whole map on its own.

Ambrosia, one of the swampier stretches of Leonida beyond Vice City proper, gives a sense of how much the surrounding regions vary in tone from the neon of the city center.

Two protagonists: Jason and Lucia

GTA 5 already did multiple switchable protagonists back in 2013 with Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, so GTA 6 isn’t breaking new ground there — but it’s a tighter pair this time (two, not three), explicitly styled after Bonnie and Clyde rather than three separate, loosely-connected arcs. The genuinely new part: Lucia is the first woman to headline a mainline GTA game, sharing top billing with Jason.

Outside of missions, players can reportedly switch between the two freely while exploring; inside story missions, Jason and Lucia stick together as a duo, working through chapter-based missions in a structure similar to how Red Dead Redemption 2 handled its cast. Each has their own combat gimmick — Jason gets a slow-motion ability aimed at weak points, Lucia gets a single-shot slow-motion trigger of her own.

What else Rockstar has confirmed

  • 200+ vehicles, with interactive interiors rather than reskins of the same handful of models.
  • Reworked combat and stealth, including prone crawling and zip-tying NPCs.
  • A tiered six-star wanted system, an evolution of the classic star meter.
  • Ray-traced lighting and strand-based hair — a real jump in fidelity over GTA 5’s now decade-old engine.
  • Side activities beyond the main story, including scuba diving and MMA.

Editions and pricing

Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026. There are two editions: Standard at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. Everyone who pre-orders a digital copy before November 20 (or grabs a physical copy while stock lasts) gets the Vintage Vice City Pack — a ’55 Vapid Stanier sedan, the Shore Court Garage near Ocean Beach, retro outfits and hairstyles for both leads, and a throwback weapon pattern. The Ultimate Edition goes further with five exclusive vehicles, four weapon variants, cosmetic packs, five shops, a dedicated garage, and a side mission that Standard Edition players won’t get at launch — all drip-fed to Jason and Lucia chapter by chapter through the story.

Demand so far backs up the hype: the physical “code-in-a-box” edition sold out on Amazon within about an hour of going live, and early PS5 pre-orders were reportedly outpacing Xbox by roughly 6 to 1.

Why it matters

GTA 6 is shaping up to be one of the biggest entertainment releases ever, on any medium — the pre-order numbers alone make that clear. The catch is the platform: console-only at launch, with PC support likely a year-plus out, so PC-only players will be watching from the sidelines well into 2027. We’ll have more once Rockstar shows actual hands-on gameplay closer to launch.
